National Deaf History Month

March 13th through April 15th is National Deaf History Month. The Wisconsin School for the Deaf (WSD) in Delavan, WI has been serving Wisconsin’s deaf and hard of hearing children and their families since 1852. The school provides educational services and programs for students in grades preschool through high school.

The library media center located at the school in Delavan is celebrating by sharing information and resources from their collections with libraries around the state! The Lone Rock Community Library is participating with a display of items that are ready to check out. To learn to communicate more effectively with your baby, check out Sign With Your Baby, a how-to book written by Joseph Garcia. Watch and listen to children’s stories with Read With Me, a DVD featuring 3 storytellers that sign The Very Busy Spider, Owl Babies, and Monster Can’t Sleep. Or for adults and children ages 11 and older, read Signing Fun. Author Penny Warner offers 441 useful signs. Illustrator Paula Gray provides hundreds of easy-to-follow illustrations that will help you learn American Sign Language, “the fourth most commonly used language in the United States”.
